LEED Buildings have gone through a very stringent LEED building certification process governed by the US Green Building Counsel in order to become certified. The green building industry is rapidly growing and there are currently over 70,000 LEED APs who have passed the LEED building test in order to work on LEED buildings.
A building becomes certified at varying levels taking into consideration building materials, water use, operations and maintenance. Currently the USGBC is in a transition from LEED 2.2 to LEEDv3. This transition not only affects the rating systems for LEED building certification but also the process for professional accreditation. The LEED NC, CI and EB rating systems are being replaced by new systems starting in 2009. The new rating systems will also require people looking to earn AP accreditation to take a new set of exams. Professionals looking to work on LEED buildings will have to first pass a Green Associate Exam which will consist of 80 questions and demonstrated a level of general knowledge of LEED and the rating systems. Green Ideas Education will offer a practice test tailored to the new system. In order to earn AP status you must now choose one or more of the AP specialty exams which also consist of 80 questions. A practice test for each exam will be available on this site.
LEED building certification is a thriving industry worth up to $140 billion by 2013 according to research conducted by McGraw Hill Construction in 2009.
